Best Camcorder under 200 – We Roundup the Best Video Cameras under $200

best_camcorder_under_200
Over the past 3-5 years there’s been a trend among videographers to abandon camcorders in favor of Smartphones. The quality of footage recorded from a phone can never replicate that of even the least expensive camcorders due to a number of design factors, not the least being the lens. The physical design is also a factor; camcorders have been built the same way for over 20 years for a reason, primarily the ergonomics with buttons at your fingertips. And of course, the camcorder is always the right way up, shooting proper 16:9 high definition footage in landscape mode, as opposed to portrait as smartphones do.

Arguments for the smartphone’s benefits have slowly disappeared over time. Size is no longer an issue with some camcorders smaller than current smartphones, and camcorders including built-in wi-fi make convenience a non-factor.

So which are the best low cost camcorders on the market? With a budget around the $200 mark, we wondered which camcorders are available and if they’re worth the spend.

Sample Video

  • Super long 38X zoom draws in the action from far away
  • Image stabilizer reduces picture blur during long zoom shots
  • 32.3mm wide-angle lens captures the entire scene in tight places

This is a nice little camcorder. HD video quality seems good, and moving around in menu and files is fairly intuitive. For downloading files, I connect the unit via USB to my iMac, and the videos (shot in iFrame mode) pop up right away in iPhoto – import is quick and easy. Videos are recognized and played by Quick Time Player. Battery life so far seems reasonable, around 2-3 hours. I use a 32Gb SDHC card, which has plenty of room.

The camcorder is fairly small and light-weight, which has both pros and cons. There is no light on this camcorder, so I bought a LED light for $20 that attaches easily to the bottom of the camcorder.

7. Canon VIXIA HF R60 Review

  • 57x (32.5-1853mm) Advanced Zoom and SuperRange Optical Image Stabilizer
  • Canon 3.28 Megapixel Full HD CMOS Image Sensor

  • 1080/60p recording in MP4 (35 Mbps) and AVCHD Progressive (28 Mbps) helps ensure high quality capture of moving subjects
  • Built-in Wi-Fi® allows you to easily share your images and video

Canon’s R60 is a reliable, good optical quality, and easy to use camcorder. Wi-Fi features hard to set up and streaming seemed laggy. A good entry level unit with some advanced features. However, if you want between low-light/indoor performance, you’ll have to consider camcorders with larger sensor sizes and considerably more expense.
