We Rate the Best Camcorder for YouTube

best_camcorder_for_youtube-reviewSince camcorders were first released they’ve been the top selling device for video lovers. In our roundup of the ‘Best Camcorder for YouTube,’ we cover essential features to look for in a camcorder.

We then compare the top current models to help your buying decision.

Essentials Features in a Camcorder for Shooting YouTube Videos

Optical Image Stabilization: Unlike Mirrorless and DSLR camera chassis all of our recommended camcorders include image stabilization. If you don’t plan to use a tripod, image stabilization is a must. Otherwise, your video recording will appear shaky and difficult to watch.

Audio: For music videos and outdoor environments with a heavy audio requirement, high-end audio recording is almost mandatory. 5.1 channel recording features are highly recommended. Classroom or whiteboard environments a 2.1 stereo setup will be just fine.

Weight: Depending on your where you plan to record, your camcorder’s weight can be very important. Try using Sony’s FDRAX33 with an external mic attached while you’re riding a mountain bike!

Video Quality: It’s important to note that some Camcorder models cannot take still images. If you need the ability to take stills, double check our specs list to confirm your preferred model can take images.

You will also need to decide the level of video quality that you want to record. We would highly recommend going for 1080p Full HD at a minimum. Whilst 720p looks okay on mobile devices, full HD videos are already a ranking factor with YouTube videos and we believe this will only become more important in a year or two.

If your budget is over $500, Ultra HD camcorders are available which can record in the latest video formats ((3840 x 2160p @ 30 fps (100 Mbps)). This ensures your camcorder will last for years without needing an upgrade.

#1 – Canon VIXIA HF R700 Camcorder Review

Canon VIXIA HF R700 Camcorder Review

Canon VIXIA HF R700 Camcorder

Canon’s Vixia R700 tops our list of the best camcorder for YouTube. Released as successor to the highly popular HF R600, we just can’t go past the quality HD 1080p video @ 60fps for such a low price. When it comes to the market leaders for camcorders – Canon, Sony and Panasonic are simply above the competition.

Canon has all the necessary add-on accessories for their camcorders, from tripods to external mics which will help add that extra polish to your YouTube videos.

Specs:

  • 57x (32.5-1853mm) Advanced Zoom and SuperRange Optical Image Stabilizer helps provide outstanding, steady video
  • 3.28 Megapixel Full HD CMOS Image Sensor
  • DIGIC DV 4 Image Processor captures video at 1920 x 1080 resolution and helps provide outstanding imaging performance
  • Record Full HD video directly to a removable SD memory card
  • 1080/60p recording in MP4 (35 Mbps) and AVCHD Progressive (28 Mbps) helps ensure high-quality capture of moving subjects
  • 3.0-inch capacitive touch panel LCD with increased brightness and new User Interface for easy menu navigation and simple viewing of videos
  • Advanced Baby Mode selects the optimal camcorder settings to help capture your baby’s daily growth with ease
  • Intelligent IS automatically chooses from four different modes to help optimize image stabilization for the shooting condition

Sample Video – 1080p @ 60fps

Memory Cards

The R700 has a removable memory card slot for users with heavy storage requirements. Storage compatibility is high-capacity SDHC cards and super-high capacity SDXC cards

Advanced Baby Mode

For bloggers looking to record the growth of their precious angel, Canon’s Advanced Baby Mode is perfect for capturing your child grow.

Canon included a baby mode which automatically adds your child’s age to video footage. Video settings are automatically adjusted, for aspects such as lighting and audio quality.
When shooting in Baby Mode, the camcorder’s Pre-Record (Pre REC) function is always on. This places the camcorder in a stand-by “pre-roll” mode, where it continuously records three seconds of video to memory before you even press the record button.

Touch Decoration in Baby Mode includes a stamp on your videos to mark each recording with your child’s height and weight. And with a single registration of the baby’s birth date, the camcorder will automatically calculate the number of days old and stamp videos accordingly, creating an exact diary of developmental milestones for years to come.

The camcorder’s other Baby Mode Touch Decoration options allow you to add your own drawings, captions, animations and more. All options can be appended to previously shot video as well.

It’s important to note that without Wi-fi, the R700 isn’t able to be used as a baby monitor like some owners of the more expensive R72 and R70 models.

Accessories

As we mentioned in the intro, an external mic slot is available for recording in difficult audio environments. We consider an external mic slot essential in order to future proof any camera bought for video blogging.

Includes a Tripod mount (size 1/4″ – 20)

Image Stabilizer

Canon’s Optical & Digital Image Stabilizer is another ‘must have’ when shooting vlogs. Give your video’s an edge over amateurs with videos which won’t make your audience dizzy while watching.

Battery

Canon has included a battery upgrade in the R700 package compared to earlier camcorder models. During our testing, the R700 was capable of recording for 190+ minutes from a single charge. A complete charge from 0% to 100% took approx 1 hour.

Weight

8.29 oz / 235 g without grip belt
10.76 oz / 305 g including BP-727 battery, memory card, grip belt

Dimensions:

2.1 x 2.3 x 4.6″ / 53.0 x 58.0 x 116.0 mm without grip belt

Canon R700 vs R600

  • R600 doesn’t have a stereo input jack slot (both have mic in slots)
  • R700 doesn’t have the ability to take still images. If you want to want stills you’ll either need to buy the R600 or bigger brother to the R700, Canon R72, and R70.
    • R700 can’t take still images
    • R600 can take still images
  • Slightly better battery life with the R700
    • R600 Battery (BP-718)
    • Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery Pack, 3.6 VDC, 1840 mAh
    • R700 Battery: (BP-727)
    • Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery Pack Batteries, 3.6 VDC, 1840 mAh
  • R700 weighs a fraction less
    • R700 Weight: 8.29 oz
    • R600 Weight: 8.3 oz

We think the Canon R700 is reasonably priced, usually around the $300 mark at large online retailers. If this is above your budget, check out its predecessor the Canon R600.

#2 – Sony 4K HD FDRAX33 Handycam Camcorder Review

Sony 4K HD Video Recording FDRAX33 Handycam Review

Sony 4K HD Video Recording FDRAX33

If you need a camcorder capable of recording YouTube videos at 4K ultra HD resolution, the best camcorder for the money in our opinion is Sony’s FDRAX33 Handycam.

With the ‘base unit’ which we’ve link to below Sony haven’t included a battery pack. This means that you’ll need to recharge the battery whilst still inserted in your camcorder. For the considerable price saving if your budget is limited we don’t think this is a big concern. If you would like the convenience of recharging the battery in an external ac adapter, the ‘with battery and travel pack’ package.

Specs:

  • Capture 4k/24p/30p video that far exceeds HD resolution
  • ZEISS® lens w/ Balanced Optical SteadyShotTM image stabilization
  • Direct Pixel Read Out for smooth edges and color gradation
  • Manual Control ring (Iris/Shutter/Exposure/White Balance)
  • Versatile shooting w/ XAVC STM3, AVCHD®, and MP4 codecs

  • 10.76 oz / 305 g including BP-727 battery, memory card, grip belt

Sample Video – 4K @ 100Mps

Memory Cards

Important to note that you will need a UHS-I U3 or higher SDXC memory card for 100Mbps 4K recording. For shooting video at 60Mbps 4K recording a Class 10 or higher SDXC is required.

Accessories

Sony’s FDRAX33 includes a hot shoe, great for adding accessories that you’ll need to shoot YouTube videos.

Image Stabilizer

The optical steady shot works extremely well but most of my shooting used a tripod so I didn’t need it.

Sony included their Optical SteadyShot Image Stabilization in the Handycam design.

Battery

Battery life on the Sony was excellent, delivering 3.4 hours record time.

Overall this is a good camcorder for YouTube videos if you need to shoot crystal clear 4K video. Although its a few hundred dollars more than the R700, if your budget can afford it the Sony FDRAX33 has some useful features which justify the price.

Weight

So it can handle the 4K recording hardware, this is the largest and heaviest camcorder on our list.

1.32 lb / 600 g body only
1.44 lb / 655 g with NP-FV50 battery

Dimensions:

Want the Best Camera for Blogging? We Review the Best YouTube Blog Cameras

best camera for bloggingAre you planning to start a YouTube channel or post videos online? For buyers searching for the best blogging camera, our list below rates the top models available in 2016.

Which Features Make a Good Blogging Camera?

If you are wondering what kind of camera do YouTubers use? When buying a camera for blogging, there five important features to consider which will guarantee your videos look and sound professional.

#1 – Optical Image Stabilization: Depending on your vlog, it can be very common to record on the go, during activities which involve movement. Read our professional stabilizers guide to see why it’s important to consider Optical Image Stabilization when buying a vlogging camera. While most video editing packages have features to help stabilize footage you will always obtain better stabilization with a high-quality vlogging camera with built-in Optical Image Stabilization. This feature ensures your audience won’t be watching video clips with shaky video.

#2 – Audio: Viewers don’t stick around a vlog if they have trouble hearing what’s being said. Paying attention to the microphone design of a camera is arguably the most important buying decision. Just have a look at the blog comments below recordings made in rooms that echo or at very low volume. All the best vlogging cameras which we’ve listed in our guide have mic’s which will perform in even the most testing conditions. You will find that the more expensive cameras also have a microphone jack which allows upgrading to an external microphone if the need arises.

#3 – Weight: Cameras generally don’t weigh much but get surprisingly heavy when you hold with an extended arm for a minute or so. The vlogging cameras in our guide are relatively lightweight so you will not get sore while vlog recording.

#4 – Image Quality: We recommend buying a camera capable of recording in at least 1080p or ‘Full HD’. If you’re looking for an affordable vlogging camera and can’t afford the extra money for 1080p try to at least buy a camera that shoots in 720p.

Anything below is average quality compared to YouTube channels and will possibly effect growing your audience. If you have a larger budget and want the best vlog camera pick a camera that shoots in 4K or ‘Ultra HD’. We have a great 4K camera guide – just keep in mind if you buy a camera that shoots 4K you’ll need a high-end laptop to edit the footage ready for YouTube.

#5 – The lens: Given that most of your footage will be recorded at close quarters it’s important to buy a vlogging camera with a lens that’s suitable for good video quality while shooting at close range. Nothing looks worse for your viewers than watching a vlog with the subject out of focus.

Best Digital Camera for Blogging

Canon PowerShot G7 X

canon_powershot_g7_x

Canon PowerShot G7 X

Features and specs:

  • 20MP BSI CMOS sensor
  • Exposure compensation dial
  • 24-100mm equivalent lens
  • Flip-up rear 3 inch LCD touchscreen

This advanced compact camera has a 1-inch sensor and a fast 4.2X zoom lens. It can video 4 GB, which is about 30 minutes of recording time, depending on the memory card.

The camera has a 3-inch flip-up display LCD touchscreen, especially convenient for viewing selfies and blogging camera needs.

We rate the G7X as Canon’s Best Vlogging Camera.

Sample G7X Video

Many well-known video bloggers have purchased this camera for producing their YouTube videos. The G7 X is touted as a great camera, and it is easy to see why vloggers more than just like it.

The G7 X performs particularly well at night, and the sound is also very good. The physical compensation dial is a terrific addition for this small unassuming camera, which also contains 3 ways to launch WiFi connectivity.

The focus assist light is used as a count-down timer, which I have heard can be blinding, if not careful. At ISO 1600, a JPG will start to lose quality. 6.5 frames per second, continuous shooting with auto-focus is good, but the battery life is not so good. Perhaps the best features this camera offers is high image quality. This is achieved by combining the 24-100mm equivalent with the F1.8 – 2.8 zoom.

Best Vlogging Camera under 200

If you’re looking to start blogging on a budget, then look no further than Sony’s DSCW830. This is an ultra cheap blogging camera that’s perfect for beginners, with 20.1 Megapixels and 8x Zoom capable of shooting 720p HD in MP4 format.

Sony DSCW830 Sample Video

The optical SteadyShot stabilization with 2-way active mode gives you the freedom to record video while driving, walking or even cycling. Sony’s intelligent auto setting adjusts to the lighting environment and face detection software technology automatically configures optimal focus and exposure balance so you can start recording while your camera takes care of the technical stuff.

Canon PowerShot ELPH 110

Canon PowerShot ELPH 110

Canon PowerShot ELPH 110

Features and specs:

  • 16.1 MP
  • 3 inch LCD display on the backside
  • Hybrid image stabilization
  • HD 1080p video recording
  • Blink detection and slow motion
  • 4x digital zoom, 5x optical zoom
  • 24 – 120mm equivalent UA lens

Released in 2012, is a compact vlogging camera, in the under $300 price range, provided for portability and HD on the run. Records at 1080p and easy to handle, image stabilizing works well. Canon’s Powershot ELPH is perfect for buyers who need a portable, compact and light vlog camera.

Sample Blog Video with ELPH 110

It is used by some strictly for vlogging because of it is compact and lightweight design. Practical and affordable, the ELPH 110 takes great still photos, but most importantly for vlogging, it produces excellent video. Aperture settings and filters can be set manually or auto. Auto-focus works nicely and quickly. Small and lightweight, this camera is great for quick and easy access. Buttons on the side of the LCD are for navigation. The LCD is a 3-inch color display with wide angle viewing.

The low-light is decent. The zoom when in use is a bit noisy. Battery life is decent but for vlogging, it is best to always carry an extra battery. It will come in handy The external speaker for playback is not great. In fact, it is said to sound tinny, and the volume needs to be cranked all the way up.

The image stabilizer works well but I’d recommend buying a more expensive camera if you plan to record on bumpy roads in a vehicle.

Canon PowerShot A2600

Canon PowerShot A2600 reviewFeatures and specs:

  • a 5x zoom lens
  • Rechargeable lithium-ion battery
  • 16 MP
  • 3 inch LCD display with 230k resolution

Once again, this is a point and shoot in the Canon Powershot lineup. Some of the basic features offered in this relatively inexpensive camera are as follows:

Weighing a modest 4.8 ounces, the A2600 is a small, easy to use and convenient camera that can produce a high-quality image generally, but suffers in low-light conditions. Although there is no optical image stabilization, it does have a terrific lens. A dedicated wall charger is included for charging the lithium-ion battery.

This is a departure compared with most similarly priced cameras which require an in-camera recharge system. There is no optical zoom available during video record, but the lens covers 28 – 140mm field of view and can provide for landscape and group shots nicely. The A2600 also has a dedicated video record button, for convenience, and a separate button for the flash. The eco-button facilitates the LCD sleep mode for power saving purposes.

There are also display controls for playback, delete and information. As a start-up, entry-level camera, there is a good help button, which provides a useful guide, on-screen. Compared to similarly priced cameras, the A2600 out-performs in image sharpness. In QuickTime format, the video is limited to 720p25 and once again, there is no optical zoom in video record mode.

The only port provided is for a mini-USB connector. Standard memory cards can be used in SD, SDXC and SDHC formats.

Canon VIXIA mini X

Canon VIXIA mini X review

Canon VIXIA mini X

Features and specs include:

  • Flip-up screen, great for seeing yourself
  • Internal recharge
  • Canon NB-12 battery

Pros:

  • Best audio, even compared with higher-end cameras.
  • Stand-up, pull-down lever provides for varying angles and vantage points, for vlogging, selfies
  • Mic input is available to enable attachment of an external mic

Sample Vixia Mini X Video

A unique design format, permitting a convenient handheld mobility. The LCD display also shifts up for great viewing, for selfies or group photos. It contains a stand that folds-up and can be used for easy and variable placement, for recording. The VIXIA contains an input for an external mic, which is in addition to the internal mic. This is great for interviews, which can then be mixed. The mic volume level is adjustable.

The camera has separate record and playback buttons. There is no optical zoom, but there is a wide angle and 35mm equivalent. Musicians should adore this unit because of the high-quality audio, with stereo microphones. The internal audio is not compromised by wind, cars or other potential noises. An external microphone, such as a lavalier can be conveniently added-in facilitating a mixing-in of internal audio with external mic audio. This is great for an interview, music, and voice-overs, for example. The in-camera review is convenient with the playback button.

A headphone external input is available. Inclusive: camera, USB cable, Canon NB-12L battery (& charger) and wrist strap

Sony RX100M3

sony_rx100m3 review

Sony DSC-RX100M III Cyber-shot

Features and specs include:

  • 20.1MP 1
  • BIONZ X Image Processor
  • Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* f/1.8-2.8 Lens
  • 24-70mm (35mm Equivalent)
  • 1440k-Dot OLED Tru-Finder Pop-Up EVF

The Sony RX100M3 III is another model rated as the best vlog cameras in 2016. Between the brilliant HD video quality and image stabilization features, it just pips the Canon G7 X as the market leader in the sub $1000 price point.

My only criticism is it lacks an external microphone port. But I consider the RX100M3 as a better option over a G7 X due to the better audio recording and ability for the battery to be recharged while being used.

Canon EOS Rebel T5 (1200 D)

Canon Rebel T5 review

Canon Rebel T5

Features and specs:

  • 18MP
  • DSLR type camera
  • 3X optical zoom
  • Built-in detachable flash

In the under $500 range, is a substantial upgrade from the previous version, the T3 (1100D), with an 18 MP image sensor and the ability to record in full HD video. Providing optimal image stabilization and (STM) silent auto-focus during active video recording the EOS Rebel T5 is a good camera for blogging plus an excellent choice for intermediate bloggers seeking an easy to use a video camera.

Apple and Android app stores have a companion guide designed for first-time users providing a “how to” use the camera and its features.

Sample Video EOS T3

Cons:

  • The viewfinder is small and difficult to see through
  • The LCD display is also reflective, especially with bright sunlight
  • Battery life is shorter than its predecessor
  • At lower ISO settings, longer videos may suffer

As an entry-level DSLR camera, it is lightweight and handles well. It has a 3 inch LCD display with 460 dots, but no touch controls. The display quality is good from all angles, with LCD brightness on maximum on a sunny day, the display is highly viewable. The auto-focus uses a 9 point AF (auto-focus) system, while a lens with an aperture of f5.6 or wider is required for auto-focus to function.

The live view takes longer to focus. The Rebel T5 uses standard SD memory cards and a lithium battery. The separation between the triple mount and the battery compartment is a convenient upgrade. Mini HD, USB, and 2.5mm wired remote access are available inputs. The most impressive features are the high image quality and ease of use.

Best Vlogging Camera under 300

Perfect for capturing everything from blog videos to birthday party snaps, the high-zoom, compact-body PowerShot SX710 HS camera has been one of 2016’s best sellers. Canon has done a brilliant job combining powerfully photography features but still being simple to use.

  • Brilliant point and shoot camera, top rated across the $300 price range

Canon’s 30x Optical Zoom provides the flexibility to take your still images while also recording vibrant 1080p Full HD video.

How to Produce Great Quality Videos

For the best quality video recordings don’t forget the importance of high-quality audio. The best sound recording is produced using a pair of over-the-ear headphones and a separate microphone. Avoid in-ear Bluetooth headphones, they are designed to allow a small amount of ambient noise for safety reasons.

Sennheiser HD280 Pro’s have been rated by bloggers as one of the best over-the-ear headphones for vlog production. When you combine a pair of HD280’s with a lapel mic such as the Sennheiser ME 2, you will be amazed at the sound playback improvement for a minimal investment.

Final Thoughts

Of course, the best vlogging camera is one that best suits YOUR needs. Depending on your Vlog’s contents and the environment that you’ll be shooting, for example, if you record in low-light conditions you will need a camera which can perform in these conditions.

If you blog while on the move a camera suited for action or sports footage will be perfect. If you already have a top rated microphone and audio setup buying a vlogging camera with external mic jack will be your best option.

Most of all just remember the type of blog and audience that you’re looking to grow and buy the camera which will best suit the end result. Good luck!

Each of the cameras that we have reviewed is divided into the different price ranges and case type. Of particular value in the Canon brand is the Powershot range, which offers quick point and shoots functionality contained in a small case.

This is true in all price ranges which is why the Powershot is such a popular camera used by food, fashion and tech video bloggers.

Sony also produces an excellent camcorder, which is why we rated their HD CX405 as the top blogging camcorder on the market.

Buying Guide: Some of the Cheapest 4K Cameras in 2016 and 2017

Cheap 4k Camera Introduction

With the popularity of home videos and new 4k capable playback devices being released – from TV’s, Smartphones and Home Entertainment systems – it’s only natural that the market for affordable 4K, or Ultra HD cameras are also expanding.

But with 4k cameras being relatively new to the market, prices are still high compared to similar models which can’t shoot in 4k. We review the current market to find if it’s possible to buy an affordable 4K camera for $500-$1,000.

As new models are released – we’ll update our list so its always up to date.

Best 4K Mirrorless Camera

sony_alpha_a6300_mirrorless_digital_camera_with_16-50mm_lensSony’s Alpha a6300 was only released in March 2016 but has already received DP Reviews Gold award and reached #1 Best Seller status on Amazon.

What makes this one of the best 4k cameras on the market? For starters, there’s the world’s fastest Auto Focus speed (0.05 sec.) so you won’t ever miss that perfect shot again.

Forget about external 4k the a6300 support for internal UHD 4K30 & 1080p120 functionality. The a6300 uses the full 6K width of its sensor to sample video, which is then downsized to 4K. The quality is excellent, as are the supporting tools. The 1080p footage isn’t particularly special but the 100mbps 4K footage in XAVC S is very good.

4K Daylight Sample Recording

With its mirrorless chassis owners have the option to choose whichever lens suits their still photography preference.

Its Weather-Sealed Magnesium Alloy Body is a nice improvement over the previous a6000 chassis.

Our only complaint is the slightly ‘clunky’ user interface with no touchscreen display – but considering the 4k recording quality, autofocus capability and live feed bursts at 8 fps that’s something we can live with quite easily.

Second Choice – 4K Mirrorless

panasonic_lumix_dmc-g7ks_dslm_mirrorless_4k_camera_review

If you are looking to do buy one of the best 4k cameras, we highly recommend the ¾ inch chassis Panasonic’s. Not only are their models capable of producing brilliant quality videos, they are also very affordable compared to the top range Sony units.

Panasonic has very high ratings across the buyer review sites like Digital Photography Review and Amazon. With their highly rated G7 model priced in the $500 range – they make a great family video camera without breaking the bank.

Panasonic’s G7 model is a popular micro-four-thirds still camera design, offers solid still-photography as well as 4K and HD video options.

Without question, the G7’s stand-out feature is its video capability. It’s not just that it offers 4K but that it also offers a good range of support tools and features to make it easier to shoot video (even if you stick to 1080p). In addition to focus peaking and zebra, the G7 also offers a flip-out screen with on-screen touch controls (to avoid the sound and vibration of using the camera’s control dials), and a mic socket for recording better quality sound.

This footage is taken from a crop of the sensor, just as happens with the more expensive Panasonic GH4.

The G7 offers full exposure control during video shooting, though Auto ISO is only available in P, A and S modes, meaning you can’t set aperture and shutter speed then let the camera maintain brightness. It can autofocus during recording and is generally pretty good at not wobbling too much and destroying the resultant footage, but you still tend to get better results with the manually-focused footage.

Best 4K Action Cam

sony_fdr-x1000v-w_4k_action_cam_review

If you’re looking for an affordable 4k action cam, the Sony FDR-X1000V/W 4K Action Cam narrowly pips the GoPro Hero4, and it’s usually $100 cheaper.

  • Professional 4K (3840 x 2160) video recording with up to 240p HD / 120p HD
  • SteadyShot(TM) image stabilization works from bikes to aerial shot and more
  • Control up to 5 Action Cam via phone1 or LiveView(TM) Remote (Sold Separately)
  • Splash-proof body with universal tripod mount
  • Built-in stereo mic for quality sound with wind noise reduction
  • Automatically creates highlight video in MP4 from multiple clips
  • Loop recording prevents running out of memory card
  • Live stream your video via Ustream
  • Advanced manual control allows flexibility in movie expression
  • Ultra-wide up to 170° pro quality f/2.8 bright ZEISS® lens

Sony FDR-X1000V/W Sample video

We rate the Sony X1000V higher than the GoPro Hero4 for a few reasons.

  • No time limit on 4K shooting and no issues overheating causing the device to shut down.
  • Reviews stating better image quality (although, maybe only marginally)
  • Sony has also developed a better menu system to that of the GoPro Hero.

Only drawbacks for the Sony.

  • The biggest issue is battery life at maybe 25 minutes of recording with a fully charged battery. On the plus side, the Sony will accept a USB battery pack for an extended run time but must be able to supply 1.5 amps minimum.
  • Also, the Sony has a built-in tripod socket, as does the UW housing.

Best 4K Camcorder

Sony 4K HD Video Recording FDRAX33 Handycam Review

Sony’s FDRAX33 camcorder is really a video camera with photography as an add-on. For the best still image performance, it would be better to buy one of Panasonic’s highly rated G7 series.

  • Capture 4k/24p/30p video that far exceeds HD resolution
  • ZEISS® lens w/ Balanced Optical SteadyShotTM image stabilization
  • Direct Pixel Read Out for smooth edges and color gradation
  • Versatile shooting w/ XAVC STM3, AVCHD®, and MP4 codecs
  • 0.27″ EVF (201K) and touch screen 3″ Xtra Fine LCDTM (921K)
  • 5.1ch surround sound mic w/ manual audio controls
  • Automatically creates highlight7 video in MP4 from multiple clips
  • Connect, control, backup, and share wirelessly with NFC2/Wi-Fi®

Sony FDRAX33 Sample 4K Video

Sony FDRAX33 Sample 1080p Video

Build construction and design is beautiful and as usual for Sony very high quality. It’s pretty heavy for its size, but for the footage is phenomenal.

If you’re used to older HDV cams, it won’t bother you. The 3.0 LCD is beautiful, the OLED viewfinder is gorgeous, it has every possible manual control you could want (all of them being independent).

The Wi-Fi function is pretty handy. Either stream directly from your Handycam whilst recording. Otherwise, transfer files via Wi-Fi to your laptop and upload to your storage facility. It’s very easy to shoot with Sony’s well-designed auto mode.

I also really like that besides the touchscreen LCD, it has MANY physical buttons for manual controls!

Sony hasn’t included an AC power adapter to bring the price down. Charging with the FDRAX33 base package needs to be done with the battery in your Handycam. Look for the battery pack upgrade model if this will be an issue for you.

If you want to record at 4K 100Mbps you’ll need to buy a UHS-I U3 or higher SDXC memory card. Shooting at 4K 60Mbps requires a Class 10 or higher SDXC memory card.

Best 4K Smartphone

apple iphone 6s

Apple’s powerful duo of iPhone 6S Plus and 6S phones represent the latest in the company’s iPhone product line. Holding position as Apple’s ‘flagship’ phones both models include 4K ultra HD video recording in addition to a 12 MP photosensor.

Of course, it’s also expected the new iPhone 7 will be released in late 2016, so currently the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus pairing are the only IOS platform smartphones with native 4K video shooting capability.

Check out the beautiful 4K video shot on an Apple iPhone 6S to see the video quality possible via a phone.

Furthermore, they can record 4K UHD video at 30 frames per second, 1080p video recording at 120 fps and 720p HD video recording at an impressive 240 fps. It’s also worth mentioning that these smartphones have already been by videographers to film documentaries in 4K UHD. So it’s safe to say they’ve proven their place as a reliable 4K recording device.

How To Choose an Affordable 4K Camera

When planning an upgrade to a 4K capable camera, the first question to ask yourself is: “Will you also need to take still images?”. If the answer is ‘yes’, go for a mirrorless or DSLR camera. If you only intend to record video, with occasional still photography – a 4K camcorder will be your ideal (and cheapest) option.

In our guide of the cheapest 4K cameras – we break the list of available devices into three categories – Camcorders, Mirrorless and Action cams.

If you want to skip our analysis and get straight to which model is best for your 4k video camera – check out each category in the table.

Mirrorless cameras are one of the cheapest ways to buy a 4K camera. Generally priced between $500 – $1500, they take high-quality pictures and 4K video recording is excellent. Camcorders are priced in the $1500 range, and still, offer one of the cheapest ways to get a 4K camera – albeit with limited still image capability. We recommend mirrorless cameras unless you are a keen photographer. The fact they don’t include a viewfinder or interchangeable lens won’t affect most buyers. Our pick for the best affordable action cam, the Sony FDR-X1000V/W 4K  is another option under $500, but the battery life shooting 4K is limited in comparison to the others.

A DSLR allows a camera with interchangeable lenses and a viewfinder (entry-level mirrorless cameras don’t have viewfinders) and, at the other end of the scale, almost all professional sports, press and wildlife photographers choose full-frame DSLRs over every other camera type. We haven’t included any DSLR cameras in out top list due to the cost, even the cheapest versions are $2,000.

Best Camcorder under $200 – We Roundup the Best Video Cameras under $200

best_camcorder_under_200
Over the past 3-5 years, there’s been a trend among videographers to abandon camcorders in favor of Smartphones. The quality of footage recorded from a phone can never replicate that of even the least expensive camcorders due to a number of design factors, not the least being the lens. The physical design is also a factor; camcorders have been built the same way for over 20 years for a reason, primarily the ergonomics with buttons at your fingertips. And of course, the camcorder is always the right way up, shooting proper 16:9 high definition footage in landscape mode, as opposed to portrait as smartphones do. Today we’ll rate the best camcorders under $2

Arguments for the smartphone’s benefits have slowly disappeared over time. Size is no longer an issue with some camcorders smaller than current smartphones, and camcorders including built-in wi-fi make convenience a non-factor.

So which are the best low-cost camcorders on the market? With a budget around the $200 mark, we wondered which camcorders are available and if they’re worth the spend.

Sample Video

  • Super long 38X zoom draws the action from far away
  • Image stabilizer reduces picture blur during long zoom shots
  • 32.3mm wide-angle lens captures the entire scene in tight places

This is a nice little camcorder. HD video quality seems good, and moving around in menu and files is fairly intuitive. For downloading files, I connect the unit via USB to my iMac, and the videos (shot in iFrame mode) pop up right away in iPhoto – import is quick and easy. Videos are recognized and played by Quick Time Player. Battery life so far seems reasonable, around 2-3 hours. I use a 32Gb SDHC card, which has plenty of room.

The camcorder is fairly small and light-weight, which has both pros and cons. There is no light on this camcorder, so I bought a LED light for $20 that attaches easily to the bottom of the camcorder.

Canon’s R60 is a reliable, good optical quality, and easy to use camcorder. Wi-Fi features hard to set up and streaming seemed laggy. A good entry level unit with some advanced features. However, if you want between low-light/indoor performance, you’ll have to consider camcorders with larger sensor sizes and considerably more expensive.
